Scholarships

Dear High School Graduate,

On behalf of the Home Education Recognition Organization, Inc. (HERO), we congratulate you on completing your home education program with distinction.  You may be rightly proud of your achievement; it is students like you who prove that home education works.

The qualifications for each scholarship, and instructions for submitting applications are described below. We invite you to review the descriptions of these scholarships below and submit the attached application for any of the scholarship(s) for which you believe you qualify.

CRAIG DICKINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (For academically excellent students)

The Craig Dickinson Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who has excelled in their chosen path of education. Applicants must be graduating seniors who were home educated for at least the last two years. Applicants must graduate and begin an educational program at a college or university no later than Fall of the current year.

HERO will take into consideration the candidate’s application, references, autobiography, homeschool transcript and selected test scores (if available). We will only review the materials that have been requested; no other materials will be considered in the selection process.

MASON LIGHTHOUSE SCHOLARSHIP (For service-minded students)

The Mason Lighthouse Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 given to an outstanding individual who has been a light of service to his/her homeschool, church or civic community. Applicants must be graduating seniors who were home educated for at least the last 4 years of high school.  Applicants must graduate and begin an educational program in a trade school, college or university, or enter a missions program no later than Fall.  HERO will take into account the candidate’s application, service experience, references, homeschool transcript, and autobiography. We will only review the materials that have been requested; no other materials will be considered in the selection process.

STATE OF THE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship awards $1,000 to a homeschooled student who plans to study performing or visual arts past high school. Applicants must have been homeschooled through four years of high school and demonstrate significant experience in the arts.  Dance, music, theatre and studio art will all be considered.  Applicants must graduate and begin an educational program in an art school, college or university no later than Fall.   HERO will take into consideration the candidate’s application, references, autobiography, homeschool transcript and artistic accomplishments to date, plus a portfolio of 10 pages of less or a CD or DVD of 5 minutes or less.

THE SANDRA HANCOCK SCHOLARSHIP

The Sandra Hancock Scholarship is a one-time award of $500. It honors Sandra Williams Hancock, co-founder and Director for over 35 years of New Covenant School, a Florida-based private school for home educated students.

Mrs. Hancock has provided advice and guidance to the founders of many Florida homeschooling groups, and has overseen the homeschooling programs of more than 1,000 students, producing over 100 homeschooled high school graduates. Graduates have gone on to attend over 25 colleges and universities, including Harvard University and U.S. Military Academies.

This scholarship is given to the applicant whose bio in the H.E.R.O. scholarship application best exemplifies the benefits of home education.
